South Australia’s most desirable fishing destinations, whether you like to relax with your rod on a jetty or get out in the boat, South Australia certainly has a decent handful of excellent fishing spots. Some would even say that keen Aussie anglers are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a place to throw a line around Adelaide and beyond. In this article, we’ve put together a list of some of South Australia’s top fishing destinations, the types of fish you can find there and why amateur and experienced fishers alike will love them!

Eyre Peninsula

Eyre Peninsula – Door to Door can transport your boat to South Australia from interstate for your fishing holiday.

The waters around the Eyre Peninsula are teeming with saltwater fish! In fact, around 65% of Australia’s catch comes from the oceans close to the Eyre Peninsula, and there is an abundance of five-star restaurants in the area serving deliciously fresh seafood all day long. Head to Whyalla for snapper, Port Neill for King George whiting and yellowfin whiting, and find Australian salmon at Locks Well Beach. Farm Beach on the west coast is also a fantastic place to catch whiting, but boats may need to launch from Coffin Bay boat ramp and make the 15km trip around to Farm Beach to get amongst some of the action. Not a bad excursion with a little sightseeing on the way!

York Peninsula

The York Peninsula is a jetty fisher’s delight! But that doesn’t mean that anglers can’t get their sea legs on too. Head to Port Hughes for your chance to catch snapper, King George whiting, snook and gar. Crabbing is also popular in this area if you want to try your hand at something a little different. Eager to get your hands on a real biggun’ though? Head out to Cape Elizabeth for salmon up to 2kg (best found in winter) and the steamer channel for enormous snapper.

Murray River

Murray River – Door to Door can transport your boat to South Australia from interstate for your fishing holiday.

If freshwater fishing is more your jam, you can’t miss out on casting along the Murray River. While many of the better-known fishing spots along the mighty Murray reside in Victoria and NSW, South Australia still has its handful of hidden gems. Reeling in the iconic Murray cod is a bit of a rite of passage for many Aussie fishers. Looking for trout big enough to feed a small army? Head across the border to Albury in NSW, where you can also hook yellowbelly. If you’re after somewhere a little quieter, however, seek out Katarapko Creek in the Murray River National Park. You’re sure to find quite a few species of native fish, just beware that there is a lot of carp around too. It’s worth noting that there are restrictions on when you can fish for Murray cod in South Australia, which you can view here.
