5 Ways to Get Involved in Car Racing in Brisbane

By in Car Rallies and Events, Interesting News and Tips

If you’re an aspiring auto racer, there are lots of opportunities to get behind the wheel in Brisbane. From novice enthusiasts, to those looking towards getting into amateur racing on a regular basis, here are some options to consider.

1. Come and try Days

Come and Try Days are held in different racetracks around Australia throughout the year. These are run by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and designed to get people involved in motor sport in a safe and controlled environment. In Queensland, the most accessible venues to Brisbane for Come and Try Days are Willowbank Raceway and Mt Cotton Training Centre. Categories include: hillclimbs, autocross, super sprint and rally.

2. Speedway Australia

Speedway racing is a form of motorsport racing on a dirt or clay track. Speedway Australia runs events throughout the year on most weekends. Brisbane has the Archerfield Speedway with events such as sprintcars, super sedans, midget cars and Fords vs. Holdens, so there is plenty of opportunity to find out what area of the sport you want to be involved in. If you’re after high speeds and intense competition, then speedway racing will be right up your alley.

3. Red Balloon Race Car Driving

Red Balloon offers numerous race car driving experiences in Brisbane depending on your budget. These are track oriented with options such as the Lotus Drive and Ride Package for 8 laps, or the Skid Pan Experience in a Toyota 86 Sportscar. There are also Car Racing Simulator experiences if you’re reluctant to handle an actual car. At the low end of the spectrum you’re looking at around $120 for laps in a Lotus Exige, while the top end is $750 for 20 laps in a Formula Ford Race Car, but there are discounts to be found on some of the packages.

4. V8 Race Experiences

Queensland Raceways in Willowbank offers V8 race car experiences in a Ford or Holden, with a personal instructor who gives you tuition through a helmet intercom system. Prior to getting strapped in behind the wheel in your race suit you’re given pre-drive tuition on how to handle the car, cornering and braking, etc. The instructor will then guide you through gear changes and braking points so you can safely manoeuvre around the track but still get up a decent speed.

5. Formula Ford Experience

A Formula Ford is an open-wheeled single-seater race car used in the Formula One motor racing championship. When you hop into a Formula Ford, you’ll be experiencing what it’s like to drive a real race car along with some of the great names in the sport such as Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Mark Webber. Places you can get the Formula Ford Experience in Brisbane are at Lakeside Park and Queensland Raceway. It costs $299 for 5 laps of the track.
